End of Year GOY Results

The end of year GOY results are now online before the ever important Club Championship this Saturday. Ryan Tabibian and Aaron Walburg are tied for first place with 38 points a piece, followed closely by Andrew Kang with 36 Points. Within statistical striking distance is Dave Lozow and Chad Carey. Both will need to place 1st in their flights to have a shot at the Golfer of the Year honors.

However, the most interesting twist is that both Ryan Tabibian (Out of town) and Andrew Kang (Mexico) will miss this tournament. Therefore, Aaron Walburg is the clear favorite going into the last tournament of the year.

2 Ball Club Champion Ship

In a rather interesting turn of events, UCGC and USCSF Golf Club were tied up with 29 points each at the end of the tournament. As a result, a random card was drawn against the last UCGC group, who were not directly playing aginst any UCSF Golfers, and UCGC ended up losing 2 1/2 down.

28th Annual Orinda Golf Tournament

Once again it is that time of the year. We are only weeks away from the annual Cal Golf Team fund raiser at the Orinda Country Club on September 17th, 2007. For those of you who've played at these tournaments in the past, you know how much fun it can be. Those of you that have not played it is a worthwhile experience, and the money goes to a good cause: Cal Golf Team.

The tournament is also followed by a dinner and an amazing auction with some really interesting goods and packages. You can find the preliminary list here.

Orinda Golf Tournament Entry Form

GOY Race is Heating Up

Once again the GOY race is coming down to the wire. This year it is between Steve Desimone (39 Points) and Jimmy Ikeda (34 Point). The winning scenario is as follows:

Steve Desimone

He is currently due to play his final Eddie Reed match against Mike Armstrong. If he wins that match, and gains the 2 points, he will end the year with 41 points (Steve will not be playing in the Club Championship) putting pressure on Jimmy Ikeda to place first at the Club Championship. If Steve loses his match, he will end the year with 39 points, 5 ahead of Jimmy.

Jimmy Ikeda

Jimmy is currently out of Eddie Reed, so his only chance for points is to place in the Club Championship. If he places first, and gets the 10 points, he will win the 2007 GOY. However, if he places second and Steve does not win his final Eddie Reed match, he will finish the season with 39 points and a rare tie for the 2007 GOY.

However, if Steve wins his final Eddie Reed match, Jimmy will have to place 1st in order to win GOY.

Dennis Smith & Rick Guevara

Dennis & Rick are entering the Club Championship with 29 total points. They are both currently out of Eddie Reed, so their only chance for points is to place at the Club Championship. If they both place first in their respective flights, they will both finish the season with 39 total GOY Points. What does this mean? The potential for a four way tie for GOY.

4 Way Tie for GOY

If Dennis and Rick place first in their respective flight, and Steve remains at 39 points, and Jimmy finishes second, we could have an albatross of a 4 way GOY tie.

All these scnearios lead to one thing: An exciting finish for a great UCGC season

Reno Weekend Results

With the mercury nearing the 3-digit mark, the 20 players (14 members and 6 guests) that attended this 2 day event, were treated to an interesting pair of golf courses, different layouts and different challeges. Saturday’s tournament was played at Wolf Run, an interesting and demanding track that required precision off the tee, and deft putting skills. On Sunday, the field was treated to the Lakes Course at Red Hawk, wonderfully designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., that was well manicured and well maintained. The course had water on 14 of 18 holes and the water came into play on quite a few shots. The course was surrounded by a number of homes within close proximity and that added to the challenge....those who hit it straight had a definite advantage.

It is not often that we see a UCGC member shoot 2 under par (gross) in a club event. That is exactly what happened when Robert Desimone managed to bring a challenging Red Hawk course to its knees. Robert shot 70 (net 65) on Sunday to capture first place at the Reno Weekend Tournament. Even more impressive was that Robert was able to best his father's net score, Steve Desimone, by an impressive 14 strokes, with a net score of 69 + 65=134 for the weekend. Tom Furtado, who ended Saturday with a slim 1 stroke lead, finished second with a Net 68+73=141 for the weekend.

Ken Lloyd, who lost an encounter with Reno’s finest on Sunday AM, still managed to shoot a 75/71 for a total net score of 146 to take third place. Steve Desimone took 4th with a 2-day total of net 148 and Ryan Tabibian placed 5th with a net 2-day score of 151.

In the Blind Bogey flight Axel Hearn captured 1st place with a total net score of 153, followed closely by Kristin Glenchur's net 154.

Many members chose to come early and played on Thursday and/or Friday at one of the local Reno/Tahoe courses. As a result many of us got the rare opportunity to play golf 3 or 4 days in a row – a major treat for those of us with small children and a nice treat for those of us who decided to take an extra day or two out of the office.

A great time was had by all and a common sentiment from the field was that we should return to Reno next year. We'd love your feedback on this possibility.

Poppy Results

The Faculty/Staff tournament is a major favorite of our members for one very large reason: Great raffle prizes! Thanks to the tireless efforts of Steve Desimone and Curt David, the tournament featured an excellent set
of prizes ranging from a pound of Sees Candy to an
amazing four-some at Winchester Country Club. Members also won a
variety of Cal Golf gear, along with rounds of golf at courses such
as Roddy Ranch and Crystal Springs.

Oh yes -- we also did play a round of golf at one of the finest
courses in Northern California -- Poppy Ridge. The weather was
crystal clear and warm, and the usual winds that can howl
through the course were for the most part absent.

This being one of the 4 majors of the year for our club, awards in
the form of large perpetual trophies, were handed out for both Low
Net and Low Gross scores. The Low Gross was won once again by
Steve Desimone with a solid 74. Rick Guevara handily won the Low
Net trophy with a net 67, beating the next lowest flight score by 5
shots. Rob Kawamura won the UC Golf Club Low Net Champion Trophy,
awarded to the lowest net score by someone without UC Berkeley
affiliation, with a net score of 76.

The 1st flight standings (net) were as follows: 1st - Steve Desimone
(71), 2nd - Peter MacKenzie (72), 3rd - Jim Peretti (72), and 4th -
Ed Biglin (73). CTP was won by Dave Webb.

Rick Guevara (67) obliterated the field in the 2nd flight to win
1st place, followed by Andrew Kang (72), Steve Sanguinetti (73) and
Ryan Tabibian (74). CTP was won by Andrew Kang.

In the third flight Artie Yamashita (72) took first place followed
by Patty Yamashita (75), Ed Mitchell (77) and Mike Hearn (77) was 4th and won CTP.

Brentwood Golf Club Tournament

The weather was perfect, the course pristine and scores low. The absence of howling wind that we all experienced at Paradise Valley, and excellent course conditions along with the warm weather helped members post some impressive scores across the board.

While the first flight was competitive with Bill Merchant leading the way with a Net 65 for first place, followed by Mike O’Neill (68) and Mark Steppan (70), the real competition was in the 2nd flight, which showcased one of the widest handicap margins in recent memory. This can mainly be contributed to the smaller player field (thanks to the long Memorial Day Weekend).

The handicap index range extended from 15 to 40, thus posing a challenge for many members who while they were able to post respectable scores, did not place. A number of players who posted net below par scores did no place in this group. Tom Furtado (65) captured first flight in a tie breaker against the 2nd place winner, Patti Yamashita (65). Mark Northfield placed third with a strong net 66.

This was the clubs first tournament and Brentwood Golf Club. Based on the overall feedback after the round, most members were pleased with the condition of the course, although some were challenged by the close proximity of homes to the fairways. UCGC board should consider this as a possible future venue.

Rio Vista Recap

We had relatively calm conditions, at least the early groups, at the sometimes very blustery Rio Vista Golf Club. One only has to look at the leaning of the trees to tell where the prevailing wind direction comes from! The skies cleared to a warm afternoon to go along with the hot competition in each flight. Two of the three flights had tie breakers used. Dave Webb wins the first flight, which gets him to within one point of Jimmy Ikeda’s pace atop the Golfer of the Year race. This was Webb’s second win in the last four tournaments. Also a rare trifecta for Webb as he won his flight, grabbed closest to the pin, and also beat Saul Geiser 4&2 in a first round Eddie Reed match. “Webb is back” yells Steve Desimone from his office as he is told the news on the Monday after. Other flights saw Andrew Bodisco winning by three strokes in the third flight, which had the top 4 places finish under par (net). That is a first time occurrence this season. Andrew’s round of 65 ties Jimmy Ikeda (Las Positas) for low net round of the year through seven tournaments. And it was only a matter of time before we had Rick Guevara post a win. He has been winless for the 2007 season, which is something like a “Tiger slump.” He never seems to be too far outside the top ten for Golfer of the Year when the points are all tallied. Just like death and taxes….Guevara is always lurking.

Now all attention turns to the first Major of the year at dicey Paradise Valley for the Kooman Boycheff Memorial. Paradise Valley has been the host course going back to 1999. It should pose another stern test. See you in Fairfield and bring your best shots!

Coyote Creek Picture Show -- Don't forget to turn up the sound!

Coyote Creek: February 3, 2007

The scores were high all across the board to go along with the surprisingly pleasant  temperature for our trip back to the Tournament Course at Coyote Creek Golf Club. There was a consensus with the participating members that the greens were the fastest we’ve putted on this season, not withstanding the frozen ones out at Wente Vineyards a month ago. Not one golfer was under par for their net score. You have to go back to almost a year ago and 11 events to Stone Tree last April to find the most recent time no flight had anyone with a net score in the red.  To further illustrate the toughness of the course, the low gross was a 79 by Mark Steppan. And the best net score was a 74 shot by several competitors. Both Van Hall and Ed Johnson recorded victories for their first placement in any tournament this season. Overall, with a field of 44 players, the membership is showing up in good numbers in a relatively dry but frigid winter.

With five events in the books for the 2007 season we have a wide open Golfer of the Year race. There hasn’t been a repeat winner in any flight so far this year.  Regular stalwarts to this list are barley in the top ten or not anywhere to be found…at least not yet! Last year’s run away winner Ryan Tabibian (6 wins, including 2 majors) sits in a tie for 13th and our 2006 Club Champions Ken Lloyd and Boyd McCaslin are well off the pace in a tie for 31st  and a tie for 50th , respectively. There are obviously a bunch of points still out there with our Major season not even kicked off yet. It all gets started with the Kooman Boycheff at demanding Paradise Valley on May 5th. Next up is Roddy Ranch where golfing your ball is mandatory to succeed at this awesome layout. Hope to see you all there! - By: Curt David & Steve Desimone

Wente Summary

UCGC Golf Club Members were not deterred by the cold temperature and the lack of any practice time prior to our tee times. While the weather did warm up later in the day, it was so cold that members had difficulty inserting their tees into the ground due to the frost. In Fact the temperature hovered around the low 30's as members arrived to the course.

The weather did not deter Aaron Walburg, who managed to show up with shorts, and a golf shoe on one foot and a sandal on the other (you can see the pictures in the slide show). Others were clearly bundled up as though they were visiting their favorite ski resort.

FROST WARNING @ WENTE

I spoke to the club house @ 7:00 AM today, and they tell me that the temperature at the course is a balmy 18 degrees (snow boards or skis anyone?). As a result they are going to delay our start times. He suggested that everyone with early start times (before 10:30 AM) to be at the course by 9:30 AM at the latest for a Shotgun start. He plans on sending the first 10 to 15 groups out as a Shotgun starting @ 10:00 AM. All other please show up at you designated start times. The range should open between 9:00 and 9:30 AM.

New Look and Feel

Having inherited an amazingly in depth web site from Aaron last year, I found it difficult to meet the high standards set by him during his reign as the Webmaster. As a results sections of the site seemed out of date and proved difficult to keep updated. The amount of work necessary to keep the site as well as Aaron had done is tremendous. Aaron actually went back and kept results for each tournament in detail going back to the 70's. In addition he spent hours keeping detail results of each tournament along with managing thousands of images.

Most of this data is well organized in the site folders. However, even after tweaking the site for some time, I have found it difficult to keep track of this data. As an exercise, and after discussions with Curt David, I attempted to simplify the layout based on the most important information that members seek. In addition I am planning on moving the data that Aaron so tirelessly accumulated into a database and integrate it within the site in the next few months. This should simplify the organization and presentation of the data on the UCGC site. In the mean time I hope that this new design will give you the information that you seek quickly and easily.

Keep in mind that this is still a work in progress. I will work out the kinks in the next few weeks. Feel free to Email me if you have any questions or comments

We are also working on other features on the site, such as electronic tournament registration and membership requests. These components will be up on the site once the board has a chance to review and approve the changes.
