18th Annual Eddie Reed Match Play Championship
2nd Major of 2000

Steve Desimone completes a 3-peat and Mike Henry wins his first Major

In a repeat of last year's final match, Steve Desimone captured the Championship Flight of the 2000 Eddie Reed Tournament outlasting Ken Lloyd 3 and 2 at Alameda South. This was the third consecutive year that Steve has won the Championship Flight, meaning he'd won at least a dozen consecutive matches. In his match against club president Ken Lloyd, Steve won on the 16th hole. Steve was 1-up after the 9th hole. then won holes 10, 11, and 12. On 11 and 12 Ken missed relatively short putts on the freshly aerated and unpredictable greens. Ken fought back taking holes 13 and 14, but Steve went dormie upon winning hole 15. They pushed on 16, which gave Steve the match 3 and 2.

Ken had advanced to the finals by beating Dave Lozow 5 and 3. Ken's putting was the difference in that match. Ken 1-putted 11 greens including the first 8 holes. Steve advanced by beating Paul Zingg 3 and 2. This was a close match. Paul had three birdies and shot a 78. Steve shot 77 but overwhelmed Paul with a barrage of 15 pars.

Mike Henry, playing solid golf, won the first flight of the 2000 Eddie Reed tournament, beating last year's champion Steve Obana 3 and 2. Both Steve and Mike played well in the final match, but Mike's quick start proved to be too much of an obstacle for Steve to overcome. One probable factor in Steve's loss may have been his participation in the 12 kilometer(7 1/2 miles) Bridge to Bridge run earlier that day. The run began at 9am and traveled from the Bay Bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge. After the run Steve drove out to Livermore for his match. There was also a matter of some major sleep deprivation so it is clear that Steve was not in his best form. The loss brought an end to an incredible string of 9-consecutive victories in the Eddie Reed Tournament. In fact, Steve had never lost a match. Even considering the loss, Steve's record in Eddie Reed play is unprecedented.

The win gave Mike two more GOY Points, enabling him to clinch at least a second place finish in the 2000 Golfer of the Year race. It also helped advance his pursuit of GOY point leader Scott Meredith. Unfortunately for Mike, his late sprint would come up short as Scott took first place in his flight at the Club Championship, and captured Golfer-of-the-Year.

Dave Lozow in his match vs. Ken Lloyd. Click on this image and the entire picture will open(then click "Back" in your browser to get back)

In an opening round match Jack King was defeated by Aaron Walburg 3 and 1 at Poppy Ridge. Jack would have his revenge the following year (2001) when he would beat Walburg 1-up in a Quarterfinal match at Diablo Creek.

This photo was taken at the last hole of the match vs. Walburg. It was the first match Aaron had ever won. The pain was still festering from the previous year's loss to Jerry Powell. Walburg and Powell had played Lake Chabot. After 15 holes Walburg had built up a cozy 2 hole lead. Jack showed massive grit, winning the final three holes to take a 1-up victory over the stumbling first-timer. Jack went on to defeat three more opponents with 1 stroke wins, before being defeated in the final match by Steve Obana at Tilden Park. Despite Jerry's three-birdie barrage, Steve won the match 4 and 3. Nevertheless seldom if ever has a player advanced with so many close matches as Jerry. In his semifinal match vs. Clayton Woo, Jerry was down 1 with two to play before he made his move.

Eddie Reed Tournament: Not Unlike Hit Show "Survivor"

Like the show "Survivor" the Eddie Reed Match Play Tournament has dwindled down to only a few remaining castaways. Both flights have come down to the final pairing. In the Championship Flight Ken Lloyd will compete in the final against Steve Desimone. This is a rematch of last year's final in which Steve outlasted Ken 4 and 2. Ken advanced to the finals by beating Dave Lozow 5 and 3. In the First Flight, where handicaps are accounted for,  last year's Eddie Reed Champion, Steve Obana(9.3) beat long-time UCGC member Ram Sharma(24.4) 5 and 4 at Tilden to advance to the final while newcomer Mike Henry(14.6) beat the famous Eddie Reed(11.7) himself 7 and 6 at Blue Rock East to advance.

Quote of the Tournament:

Aaron: "You can't just let him (Mike Henry) walk all over you. You're Eddie Reed!"
Eddie: "I'm not letting him; He's just doing it."

(Eddie Reed, down 5 after 8 holes in his match vs. Mike Henry. Mike, pulling off one of his all-time greatest performances, was 1-under par through the first 6 holes. Mike went on to win the match 7 and 6. Another fact about this match is the 2000 served as the year in which Eddie Reed managed to advance the furthest in his own tournament. Although he lost to Mike, he'd nevertheless advanced through two matches to the semifinals.

EDDIE REED MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION

1. The players in the field are members of our club who sent in their entries on time and have an Index (regular or temporary) by March 15th. No one else is included in the field.

2. There is no entry fee. Play commences in April and continues on to conclusion prior to the Club Championship (Stroke Play) in October.

3. This is a double flight event. There is a Championship Flight and a First Flight. Please note the  Completion/Reporting date at the top of the brackets. More on that later.

4. There are seeded players in each flight. The seedings were based on previous performances in this event, performances in major championships, Golfer-of-the-Year standings and finishes in our first five tournaments.

5. It may be possible to schedule your match at our regular monthly tournament under certain circumstances,  although our tournament play is governed by the rules of golf for Stroke Play. If it is not possible, you may play your match at any golf course recognized by the NCGA and included in the January NCGA News.

6. USGA rules govern play except as modified by the local rules of the golf courses on which you play. Remember,  this is Match Play and the rules of golf for Match Play are sometimes different from those governing Medal Play.

7. The first round matches are enclosed so it is your responsibility to contact your opponent and arrange for a time to play. The phone numbers of the entire field are printed next to the names on the pairing sheet. Each match has approximately a month to be completed and that should be sufficient to schedule a mutually agreed upon  time to play ... These are our most up-to-date phone numbers! Any changes or corrections, please call Steve Desimone immediately at 643-5914.

8. In the first flight, the USGA recommends the lowest handicapper play with no handicap strokes and the other  player receive strokes equal to the difference between their handicaps. For example, the low handicapper has a  19 handicap and his opponent carries a 24. The difference is five strokes. The high handicapper receives the five strokes on the five most difficult holes, handicap holes 1-5. We will follow the USGA’s recommendation for this event. Thus, the high handicapper will “spin” off the low handicapper. **

9. Again, please note the date at the top of each bracket. The Completion and Reporting Date is just that. Your match must be concluded and reported to Steve Desimone's office (643-5914....a message is just fine) by that date. If not, the results will not be accepted and both players will be disqualified. There will be no exceptions or excuses! (Weather is no excuse!!)
