Rio Vista
5th Event of 2001 Season
Saturday, March 3, 2001

Mark Steppan continued to dominate the first flight, earning another victory. He played near-flawless golf and cruised home with a 72 gross(even par, net 69). Mark has now placed in 7 of the last 8 UCGC events. His reign of first-flight terror dates back to July 2000, when he won at the Sierra's weekend tournament. During this stretch Mark has captured 1st place five times and 2nd place twice, failing to place only at Alameda, the club championship, in October.

Mark Steppan hits a booming drive on #7.

Some members will do anything to get on their picture on the UCGC web site. Left to right are Ed Schriger, Chuck Cattano, Marty "Blondie" Connell, and Rob Simonds. The wig, ironically,  seemed to dispense some sort of powerful golfing magic, helping Marty shoot a net 68, good enough for second place in the 2nd flight. Members might be seeing the wig more often. At least Rob doesn't seem to be bothered. In fact, he appears quite enamored. The magic didn't stop with Marty. Ed's 93(net 70) gave him 1st place in the fourth flight, while Rob's 96(net 72) took 3rd in that flight. Chuck, un-amused and unimpressed with the wig's obvious benefits, suffered through one his worst-ever outings, a net 90(we won't mention the gross (literally) score. Perhaps next time Chuck might be wearing a wig of his own.

The weather was a question mark, so was the putting demonstrated on the practice green.

Chris Maters hitting a few balls at the range. Chris Maters must have set some kind of record last year, capturing several wins in the blind bogey flight

Todd Podoll at the range, making a few last-minute fine-adjustments to a near perfect swing.

The first foursome of the day. Left to right are Rollie Otto, Ken Lloyd, Mike Armstrong, and Jim Peretti.

Rollie Otto watching his drive at #1. Rollie shot an 82(net 65, one of the best rounds of his life) and easily captured the 3rd flight.

Mike Armstrong also played well. His 79(net 70) helped catapult him to second place in the first flight. His 37 on the back nine gave him the edge over Jeff Hazel in a tie-breaker. However, Jeff's 38 on the back nine made it close.

Don Wade and Jim Peretti pose for the cameraman.

Jim on the 1st hole. The absence of Steve Desimone(and the notorious chiding) seemed to bolster Jim's confidence. His 79(net 71) kept him just barely out of the money.

Ready to brave the cold, windy, weather are, Mike Birnbach, Ralph Hill, Van Hall, and Dave Webb.

Ralph Hill on #1, watching his ball in despair.

Van Hall looks equally concerned about his opening drive.

Dave Webb, also doesn't appear too thrilled.

Jeff Hazel, however, displays a little more confidence. His 78(net 70) was good enough to take 3rd place in the fist flight. He was only just edged out of second place in a close tie-breaker.

Andrew Kang pounds one long. Long, but OB. His accuracy off the tee wasn't questioned on the 13th hole, however, where his shot to within 12-feet earned him $20, and the admiration and envy of his fellow flight members.

Tom Furtado letting it rip on #1.

Jeff Day taking smooth, controlled swing.

Left to right are, Mary Pastore, Gregg Thornton, Paul Higaki and Paul Eisentent. Mary's net 70 gave her 2nd place in the third flight.

A grizzly-looking foursome: Lloyd Crenna, Jack King, Don Wade and guest Glenn Garabedian. Please, do not feed the bears.

Elliott Friedman (somehow) hacking his way to another good round. Elliott's 90(net 70) took 2nd place in the fourth flight. He was barely edged out of 1st by Ed Schriger in a tie-breaker.

Elliott hitting his approach at #6.

Randy Ballew hitting his approach on the first hole. Randy's 84(net 70) put him in a tie for third, however, he was beaten-out by Ross Sakamoto in an incredibly tight second tie-breaker.

Randy hits his approach at #6.

Ed Biglin on #1, being observed by the rest of the club.

Ed blasting out of a greenside bunker on #1.

Ed's approach shot at #6.

Jerry Powell on the 7th tee. Surprisingly, his net 78 put him only one shot out of the money in the third flight.

2000 Golfer of the Year, Scott Meredith, hitting his drive on hole #7.

Todd Podoll watches after this delicate downhill putt.

Dave Lozow with the rally cap. Unfortunately for Dave,  the rally never came.

Ross Sakamoto boldly hitting his approach shot over the water to the green at 18.

Ross showing off his winnings. Ross edged out Randy Ballew in an extremely close second tie-breaker for 3rd place in the second flight. This was the first UCGC paycheck  for Ross in the last 2 years.
