Roddy Ranch
8th Event of 2001 Season
Saturday, May 12, 2001
It was a true test of golf at Roddy Ranch on Saturday. Windy
conditions kept the scores high. There was only one net score below 70 and net
75 placed in every flight. What's more, of the 44 members that played only 2
even hit the green designated for CTP! For the first time this season Mark
Steppan is not atop the GOY standings, as Elliott Friedman wrangled his way
into the lead. Mark Steppan recorded the day's low round, a 77. Despite this,
and despite the eagle he had on the par 4 8th hole(5-iron into strong
headwind from 140 yards) his
net score of 75 was edged out in the tie-breaker. Jim Peretti and Ram Sharma
have been coming on strong of late, each of them winning their last two
outings. They've each been attacking the leader board with unmatched ferocity.
Jim's golf has been particularly inspirational to us all, especially to Steve
Desimone, who enjoys watching Jim's swing and who never tires of lavishing
praise upon Jim for his grace and majesty on the links.

Ken Alton out for a casual round of golf in his sandals? Did he actually
forget his golf shoes at home? Or maybe with a keen foresight he came
prepared for encounters with water hazards. If the situation arose he
could quickly remove his sandals and wade knee-deep for that impressive
shot. Perhaps the reason he wore sandals was to distract his fellow
competitors. If so, it didn't work too well, for playing in his foursome
was Jim Peretti who took 1st in the first flight. Nobody except Ken knows for sure the reason for this peculiar
footwear, but members will likely be gossiping for many years.

Elliott Friedman on the range, dropping the axe. Elliott placed 2nd in his
flight for the third consecutive time. In fact, of the 7 tournaments to
date, he's only once failed to place 1st or 2nd in his flight, at Windsor,
the first tournament of the year. With his second place finish at Roddy
Ranch Elliott took sole possession of the GOY lead.

Randy Bellew warming up on the range.

Charlie Flowers about to make contact.

Van Hall smacking one.

Eddie Reed practicing. His namesake tournament, the Eddie Reed Match Play
Tournament, began earlier this month.

John Robertson and Ed Biglin trying to get accustomed to the quick greens.

"Beware of snakes"?. That's for sure. At the first tee are some
slippery characters, Rollie Otto, Steve Desimone, Ken Lloyd, and Vaughn
Kezirian.

Steve and Vaughn at the range. Steve's 78, net 75, was edged out by Jeff
Hazel's net 75 in a close second tie-breaker. Steve mustered third place,
however, edging out Mark Steppan, who also shot net 75. Vaughn posted a
strong net 73 to take the second flight with ease.

Ken warming up on the range.

Ken on the first tee, almost a mirror image of his shots at the range.

Rollie on the first tee. With the high winds, Rollie's net 77 was good
enough for 3rd place in the third flight.

Steve at the range.

On the first tee Steve killed his drive.

Steve then nailed this 3-wood on up to the green. It's amazing what a
strong tailwind can do for a fella.

The marshal goes over local rules. Simply stated, staying out of the rough is
wise. Rattlesnakes and ticks are the big threat, or at least that's what
they tell us in order to keep us from endlessly searching for balls and
holding up play. These folks were smart.

Bob Tulk and Jim Peretti. Jim took the field by storm, winning the first
flight with a 79, net 72. Jim was the only player in the first two
flights to score net par through 18 holes. Coupled with his win last
month in the Kooman Boycheff Memorial, Jim stands in 5th place in the GOY
race, only 6 points off the lead.

Jim's drive on #1.

Bob laces his drive on #1.

Mike Birnbach rips one on #1.

Judge Leo Dorado plays as a guest.

Martin Kitchener chipping up on #4.

Don Wade just misses this putt from the fringe at #5.

Jack King follows his putt at #5.

Jack's approach shot at #6.

Mark Boguski contemplating a long putt at #5.

Mark lags up close on #6.

Kelly Alvarez on #7. Note the perfectly oriented clubhead in his back
swing. This shot could make the cover of Golf Digest. Or maybe Golf Today.
Or maybe the back of Golf Today. Well, it could probably make the
back of some magazine, we just don't know which one.

Russell Greenwood firing away at #7.

Mark Steppan staring down the fairway at #8. Mark eagled this par 4 with a
5-iron from 140 yards into a stiff headwind You can't see the motion in
this picture, but his pants are flapping wildly in the wind.

Is Mark hunting down some beef or playing golf? Sometimes it's difficult
to know for sure. Doubtless though, the cows were a little nervous here on
the 7th hole. Mark's net 75 lost out in the tie-breaker to Jeff Hazel and
Steve Desimone.

Scott played smart. Knowing that cows produce not just steak, but also
milk, and other dairy products he decided to lay up on #7 with the idea of
maybe earning the respect of the cows, who might provide a few grocery
items for him, like butter, chedder cheese, and, if he hit a really
impressive shot, chocolate milk. Unfortunately, his shot didn't impress
the cows.

Jerry Powell on #5.

Jerry on #8. Jerry pared the very difficult 16th hole with an amazing
approach.

Ted Goode scratching his chin, contemplating his missed putt on #18.

Dave Chia putting on #18.
