Spanos Park (The Reserve)
9th Event of 2001 Season
Saturday, May 26, 2001

Got lake? Joel Walburg attempts to "pluck" the ball from the lake on hole #17. The result wasn't as nice as the picture.

It was perhaps a difficult adjustment for our members to make, but for the first time this season members played summer rules. The expected valley heat was pleasantly absent. The temperature was ideal at around 82°. But the wind made some holes a bit precarious. With water on 12 holes, many balls suffered watery graves as they got carried away. Several members were unaffected. Aaron Walburg matched a personal-best (it's getting old now) with a 78, net 64. Others fairing well were Ken Alton net 68, Elliott Friedman net 68, Edgar Johnson net 69 and Bob Traum net 69. As for the club's better golfers Steve Desimone, sporting a new Taylor Made 320(with, as Steve put it, the "old man shaft"), shot a 75, net 72, and won the first flight. Ken Lloyd and Jim Peretti tied at one shot back. We don't normally make mention of the bad golf displayed by our members, but Kelly Alvarez deserves praise for surviving his net 97, likely the worst round(relatively speaking) this season. If Kelly were to have taken 25 strokes less than his course handicap rather than over it, he would have shot a net 47 and won his flight by 22 shots. As it was though, he still carried himself with pride and dignity in the clubhouse. All smiles and laughter, knowing that his workout had been physically more demanding than any of the others' out there. Elliot Friedman won the third flight and continued on his incredible streak of 7 consecutive tournaments placing no lower than second in his flight. His GOY lead also increased to 5 points over the nearest competitor. By the way, the CTP was messed up by the golf course. It was to have been on hole #13, but then got changed to #8 where there was no tape measure. The gift certificates(already purchased) will likely be used at Monarch Bay, another American Golf golf course. Also important to note is this tournament was the first time that a non-major had flights playing from different tees. The first flight played the blue tees while the other flights played the much easier white tees. This was an experiment and future events may be run similiarly.

Ken Alton on the driving range. Ken has learned his lesson. During the last tournament, at Roddy Ranch, Ken wore sandals and as a result his golf suffered greatly. This time, with real shoes he shot an 81, net 68, and took 2nd place in the second flight. This amazing turn-around can only be explained by Ken's fashion alteration.

Steve Obana on the range. With black socks Steve is headed down that same dreadful road Ken just traveled. He'd better get his fashion in step or, like Ken, his game will suffer.

Bob Tulk on the range. Bob is dressed nearly perfect, however his socks are a riding up a little high. 30 years ago he could have gotten away with it, but the 70's, thank goodness, are behind us. Although not as critical as Steve Obana's problem, Bob will need to fine tune his attire or else he'll not be able to maintain his good standing on the links.

Steve and Dan Copenhagen on the range. Dan likes to admire his shots.

Dan watching his drive on #7. Nothing like golf reveals that we've all got our own idiosyncrasies. Dan has the peculiar habit of freezing in this position while watching his ball until it comes to a complete stop. Behind him Mark Holman, ever patient, wonders if Dan will lose his balance. Dan never does. As soon as his ball comes to rest, Dan will surrender the tee.

Mark Holman, a lefty, doing some serious damage on the range. Hitting behind him is Ron Irving. Ron knows a thing or two about fashion, and class. Ron is the guy in the red shirt with the bold letters "Ron Irving" printed on the back.

Mark on #7. Dan has at last surrendered the tee.

Steve Desimone with his new Taylor Made 320. Steve relies heavily on the latest technology to maintain whatever edge on the field he can muster. This strategy seemed to work for him today as his 75, net 72 gave him 1st place in the first flight.

Steve hitting his new driver for the first time that day.

Steve's drive on #1. It got away from him, but he survived.

Ken Lloyd hitting a perfectly placed shot on #1. Ken's 79, net 73 edged out Jim Peretti in a tie breaker, giving him 2nd place in the first flight.

Mark Steppan on #1. Mark had a rough day. We'll leave it at that. Mark has already likely punished himself enough over his own performance.

Rollie Otto on #1. Rollie was about to tee it up from the blue tees, but ever-observant Jim Peretti came to his rescue. On this day it was decided that the first flight would tee it up from the blues while all other flights played from the whites.

John Robertson easily carries the lake on #10.

John narrowly misses this putt on #13.

Van Hall admiring his well-hit drive on #10.

Ron Irving teeing off on #10. Ron Irving is the only person in this picture. However, in case you're still confused, he's also wearing a shirt with "Ron Irving" printed in bold letters on the back.

Charlie has the best name in the UC Golf Club. "Charlie Flowers". It's a great name. His swing, however, leaves much to be desired as witnessed on the 10th tee by those in his foursome.

Randy Ballew on the 13th tee.

Tom Furtado on #3. Tom's net 75 narrowly edged out Geraldine Lauro in an extremely close tie-break. This was the first time Tom placed as a member.

Tom laces his drive on #9.

Tom on #14.

Andrew Kang on #14. Andrew's net 72 edged out Scott Meredith for 3rd place in the third flight. It was very close though.

Andrew Kang on #17.

Aaron Walburg on #9. Aaron's 78(net 64) matched a personal best and gave him 1st place in the second flight.

Aaron on #11.

Joel Walburg on #8. Joel was the only member of his foursome not to place, however his shot on #17 made a "big splash", (literally, not figuratively) and at least provided him recognition in that the picture made the front of the web site this month.

Joel staring down hole #9, trusted driver in hand. Joel has used this driver since he was 14 years old. Someone please tell him about titanium.

Joel's shot at #17. Joel was able to liberate the ball from the lake, but only temporarily. After gaining freedom from the waters edge the ball immediately plunged into a deeper part of the lake, never to be seen again. You should click on this picture to examine it closely. It's pretty cool.

Gathered around a pitcher of cold beer are Van Hall, Ron Irving(Ron's the one wearing a red shirt with the name "Ron Irving" on the back), John Robertson, and Charlie Flowers.

While Steve Obana's occupied with his scorecard, everyone else works on the pitcher of beer. Steve at least had the common sense to change out of the black socks. Around the table are(nearest first) Dan Copenhagen, Rick Guevara, Mark Holman, Vince Garcia, Edgar Johnson(who took 2nd place in the third flight) Ross Sakamoto, and Steve Obana.
