As usual, the annual Faculty/Staff was one of the most fun
tournaments of the season. Ken and Steve did another great job supplying
incredible raffle prizes which included rounds of complementary golf, golf equipment,
and lots of wine! As always, no one left empty handed.
Diablo
Creek was a good test of golf. Scores were generally high, perhaps due to the
heat. The usual suspects didn't fair well so the
GOY race tightened up a bit. None of last month's top nine GOY point holders even
placed in this event. Ken Alton, 10th in the standings last month, made up
some ground coming in 2nd place in the second flight. He is now in a tie for 6th
place. For those of
you keeping track, this was the fifth consecutive major for
Steve "De-si-mo-neh" (as pronounced by the starter). On the day that
Tiger Woods, playing in the US Open, eliminated his own chances for a
fifth consecutive major, our club manager completed the feat. John Robertson
was just one stroke back, with a 76. Jim Peretti(77) and Ken Lloyd(77) also
kept it close.

THE GOLF:
Club President Ken Lloyd on the driving range. Ken's 77 was two strokes shy
of Desimone's 75 for the President's Trophy.
Jim Peretti on the range. Jim's net 71 was only one stroke off the pace in
his flight. Unfortunately for Jim, net 70 took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in
the first flight and was decided by tie-breakers.
Steve Desimone on the range. His round of 75 captured his fourth
consecutive Faculty/Staff President's Trophy and also gave him his fifth
consecutive major. Close at his heels was John Robertson who turned in a
76.
Mike Henry on #2. Mike's net 68 was edged out by Russell Greenwood's 68 in
a close tie-breaker. Mike played extremely solid golf on every hole except
the par 5 14th hole where he recorded a 9.

Rollie Otto on #3. Rollie's net 71was just a few strokes off the pace in
the third flight.
Mark Steppan goes past horizontal on #5. Mark turned in the day's 5th best
score, 78, but placed last in his flight. Such is the life of a
2-handicapper.
Aaron Walburg on #6.
Aaron getting creative on #8. This small un-staked tree was very
problematic. He tried sitting on the tree to bend it back for a clean
swipe at the ball but was informed that bending it over using one's own
body was in violation of the rules. Instead he opted to stand next to
it.
Ken Alton on #11. Ken's net 71 gave him 2nd place in the second flight.
Ken was the only person in the top 10 of the GOY standings to place in
this tournament.

Edgar Johnson on #10. Edgar's net 69 took 3rd place in the third flight.

Ross Sakamoto on #10. Ross shot an admirable 82 net 69 to capture 1st
place in the second flight.
John Carlson on #10. John's net 70 took second place in the first flight,
being edged out only by John Robertson in a tie-breaker.

AWARDS BANQUET AND PRIZE RAFFLE:
Kevin Hillesland, Rob Simonds, Ed Schriger, and Marty Connell cool off
after a hot afternoon in the sun. Ed's 87(net 66) captured 1st place in
the fourth flight and also the Chancellor's Trophy for low net among
UC-affiliated club members.
Success in golf is greatly improved with a supportive wife, and beer. Left
to right at the head table are Elonda & Ken Lloyd and Linda &
Steve Desimone.
Steve begins the annual raffle. This Cal shag bag didn't spark much
interest.
Free rounds of golf, however, got people excited.
Ken confirms Jim Baer's raffle ticket.
