2001 Club Championship
Boundary Oak
14th and Final Event of 2001 Season

Saturday & Sunday, October 6-7, 2001

Standing over the Boundary Oak battlefield, 2001 Golfer of the Year Elliott Friedman displays his new hardware. During Round 1(Elliott's birthday, by the way) he gave himself a special gift, shooting a blistering 82(net 62). During Round 2 no one could overtake his 5-stroke lead and despite playing poorly he easily walked away with Club Championship(low net). The win increased his already commanding GOY lead to 14 points over his next closest competitor. Perhaps Elliott's most amazing feat, however, was placing 1st or 2nd in nine of the twelve standard tournaments in which he played. Needless to say he also won the most money this year, $285. How many new hats will that buy? (hint, hint)

Day 1:

Teeing up on the first of 36 holes over the next two days are Mike Birnbach, Ralph Hill, Van Hall and Dave Webb.

Mike Birnbach pounds one down the middle on #1.

Ralph Hill torques his drive on #1.

Van Hall on #1.

Dave Webb on #1.

Jim Peretti on #1.

New member Dan Tachiera on #1. Dan tied for second in the Championship flight.

Jeff Hazel on #1. On day 2 Jeff shot 36 on the back 9, the best score during that stretch over the 2-day tournament.

Mike O’Neill on #1. Mike birdied the first two holes, finishing day 1 with an 81(net 70) for a one stroke lead in the first flight. Unfortunately, Mike was unable to attend the second day of the event and had to abandon his lead.

Eddie Reed played solid golf and finished strong with a 40 on the back nine during day 2. Here he tees off on #10.

Charlie Flowers on #13. Charlie played consistent, posting a net 71 on day 1, and a 72 on day 2. He had the lead at the beginning of day 2, but was bested by Ralph Hill, who shot a net 67 on Sunday.

No one scrambled for as more ugly bogies than Jeff Day. Here he was on #18 beneath a willow tree near the lake. Day 2 would hold other interesting situations for Mr. Day.

Jeff Hazel got into a bit of trouble on #16 and had to press up against this tree just to get his club on the ball. It was an exceptional shot.

At the scorer’s table, surrounded by pesky, information-starved golfers, Ken tries to maintain order. Scoring a tournament on your own is a thankless, stressful job. Buying a beer for the scorer provides for a happier scorer.

Day 2:

Eddie Reed and Charlie flowers working out the kinks from yesterday’s round.

The first group of the championship flight. The club champion(low gross) would likely arise from this motley foursome. Left to right are, Mark Steppan, Van Hall, John Robertson, and Ken Lloyd. John Robertson, day 1 leader by 3-strokes, would manage to hold on for a 3-stroke edge over Dan Tachiera and Ken Lloyd.

Ken Lloyd on #1.

Van Hall on #1.

Randy Ballew on #1. Randy, golfing backwards, would place third on the first flight.

Randy on #2, the mirror image of a perfect follow through.

Ralph Hill on #1. Ralph would overtake Charlie Flowers to capture the first flight. Ralph shot an impressive net 79(net 67).

Ralph looking majestic on #2. Ralph doesn’t often look majestic, so this was a Kodak moment.

Ralph hungrily watching after his putt on #16. He missed the putt, but the two-putt was plenty impressive.

Chris Maters on #1. Chris shot 84(net 74) both days and placed 5th in the first flight. Chris’ 37(gross!) on the back Sunday was only bettered by Jeff Hazel’s 36 during that stretch.

Here Chris hits out of the sand on #5.

On day 2, Jeff Day got into more trouble. Here his ball was stuck beneath this oak tree on #14.

Later on #15 Jeff was up against the chain link fence. (This picture was popular back in the clubhouse.)

Then on #18, he put himself in this dusty wasteland. Still, when all was said and done Jeff was only 2-strokes out of the money.

New member Dan Tachiera hits his approach at #4. Dan placed 2nd in the championship flight.

During the second round John Robertson sank this six-footer on #5. John played flawlessly on Saturday and it was only until the back nine on Sunday that he showed any signs of vulnerability. Still, he won the low gross event by 3-strokes.

Elliott Friedman on #3. Elliott’s 82(net 62) gave him a commanding lead going into Sunday’s round. His net 76 still garnered him a 3-stroke lead over Andrew Kang.

Scott Meredith on #3. Scott followed up his day 1 round of net 67 with a net 80, but still managed to come in 4th place in the second flight.

Ron Irving sinks this putt on #3.

Kelly Alvarez takes a stab at it and drains this putt on #3.

Jack King also hits his putt at #3.

Believe it or not even Ram Sharma made his putt. The camera captured this improbable series of events.

After his round, Elliott Friedman bows to the small peanut gallery(of 3). Everyone else was at the bar recovering. Elliott had completely dominated the 2001 season, winning 5 of 12 events, placing 2nd in another 4 of them, and capping it all off with the overall low net club championship. Elliott was in a class by himself, outpacing his nearest GOY competitor by 14 points.

Ken Lloyd once again handling the scoring duties, as well as the awards ceremony. At the end of the night Ken received a well-deserved round of applause.

A large cache of trophies to be dispensed amongst the hoard of hackers.

The banquet was exceptional. “The best food we’ve ever had.” by many accounts.

Except for Elliott’s grimy, sweat-stained cap, this table enjoyed the finest vista.

Dale Steele accepting his check and trophy for 3rd place in the second flight.

Jack King receives his check and runner-up trophy for the Eddie Reed Match Play Championship.

John Robertson displays his Club Championship(low gross) trophy and gives an inspiring speech.

Elliott Friedman accepting the Golfer of the Year award.

Elliott gives a short but inspiring speech.

The best thing about the club championship tournament is that it seems like almost every one goes home with something, even if it’s only a hangover for the next morning.

Ken Lloyd with his 3rd place trophy. Ken’s never won the Club Championship. Next year, we hope, will be his year.

Randy Ballew, the lefty, wasn’t satisfied with his trophy featuring a right-handed golfer. He asked that the picture be reversed so we obliged, and provided him a left-handed trophy.

Randy Ballew and Mark Steppan celebrate in a sea of trophies. Most of them are Mark's. Mark won the 2001 Eddie Reed Match Play Championship as well as earning a runner-up finish in the Golfer of the Year competition. Mark also won a third place trophy in the Club Championship. Randy earned a 3rd place finish in the first flight. Randy also recently earned the "2001 Beer-Induced Euphoria Award."

Mark Steppan seemed to have the most hardware. Here he displays his 3rd place club championship trophy, GOY runner-up plaque, and 1st place Eddie Reed plaque.

Flight winners John Robertson, Andrew Kang, Elliott Friedman, and Ralph Hill.

GOY finalists, Aaron Walburg (left, runner-up, 40 pts.) and Mark Steppan (right, runner-up, 40 pts.) flank Elliott Friedman (center, 1st place, 54 pts.)

Quote of the tournament:

Half way through Round 1, just before withdrawing in disgust:

"I shot a 48 on the front and then the wheels fell off".
