Bodega Harbour
1st Event of 2002 Season
Saturday, October 27, 2001
The first tournament of the 2002 season didn't hold many new surprises. Elliott Friedman continued burning up the field shooting the day's lowest net score(67) and Mark Steppan shot a blistering 71(net 69) to take the first flight.
The new
GOY standings look pretty much identical with most of last year's standings. There are a few new faces out there. Chris Maters and Sam Scalise each placed second in their respective flights, Chris with an 83(net 72) and Sam(1993 Golfer of the Year) with a 90 net 70. Late in 2001 Charlie Flowers was turning up the heat. He continued where he left off with an 86(net 71), good for 3rd place in the second flight. Rounding out those that placed was Barry Woods(2001 Eddie Reed Champion[net]) whose 89(net 74) wedged him into 3rd place in the first flight.
What's most remarkable is the amazing year Elliott Friedman
has had. Not only has he won the last three tournaments, but over the past
year he's placed first in 6 of the standard 12 tournaments in which he's
participated, and placed second in four of the remaining 6. During this
stretch he's earned over $300 while lowering his index from 17.6 to 17.3.
Jeff Hazel crushing a drive on #4. Jeff almost had a hole-in-one ($100)
on #6. His shot to 2'-4" won the CTP.

On the practice green, trying to adjust to the punched greens, are John Carlson and 2001 Eddie Reed Match Play Champion(net) Barry Woods.

Rollie Otto hitting out from deep rough on #1.

Rollie on #16 watches his approach.

Steve Desimone on #4 hits a fine drive.

On #6, the CTP hole, Steve hit one to about 8 feet. Rollie followed with a shot to about 4 feet. Then Jeff Hazel hit a shot to 2’-4”
which eventually won the CTP. For the record Jeff made the putt.

The pin surrounded by three increasingly impressive shots.

Jeff Day hitting his approach at #11.

Todd Kirby on #11. Todd hit the shot of the day on #16. (see below)

Beach-combers along the 16th fairway.

Hole #16. It’s all about carrying the reeds. It's also all about not
hitting it to far over the reeds and onto the beach.

At the 16th tee are Todd Kirby and Barry Woods. From the tee Todd hit the green on the 291 16th hole. He sunk the 8-footer for an eagle 2. He then birdied the 17th and nearly birdied 18.

Todd Kirby’s shot at #16.

Todd marking his ball. It was a gutsy, if not absurd shot, but Todd pulled it off.
The foursome standing on the green at the time heard "Fore!",
but couldn't believe it when the ball landed within their circle of
putts.

Sam Scalise on #16. Sam’s 90(net 70) gave him 2nd place in the second flight.

John Robertson hitting his approach at #16.

Bob Traum watches his putt on #16.

Jeff Hazel on #16. Jeff had a strong front nine but lost his mojo on the back.

Jeff did however manage to carry the hazard on the difficult 17th hole.

Here’s the 17th, a nightmarish hole.

Jerry Powell was one of many to have that same nightmare on #17.

Jerry Powell watching Scott Meredith on #18. Scott finished 4th in the second flight.

Gregg Thornton on #18. Gregg placed 4th in the first flight.

Paul Higaki on #18, overlooking bodega bay.

New member Ron Gallagher on #18. Ron placed 5th in the second flight.

Guest Jim Maize hitting his approach at #18.

Steve Desimone on #18 hit a remarkable shot out from knee-deep rough.
