Windsor
1st Event of 2003 Season
Saturday, November 2, 2002

Tom Furtado, Andrew Kang and Yoch Lin
take a break from rigorous putting to pose for the camera.
Late on the afternoon of the Windsor event it
was discovered that there was some confusion as to which rules, winter or
summer, were in effect. There had been no mention on the starting sheet
about which rules were in effect and as a result about half of the field
played under summer rules while the other half played under winter rules.
Many assumed that winter rules were the standard. Although the tournament
was meant to be played under winter rules, others assumed that summer
rules were the default in such an instance. Post-tournament research on
the archives provided no evidence of an implied set of rules when neither
set had been specified. A report was then created in
an attempt to reveal if the Windsor tournament results might possibly have
been skewed in favor of those playing under winter rules. The report
revealed that, even providing for a significant advantage to those playing
under winter rules, the flight results would nevertheless have remained
identical. The evidence made easy the board's unanimous decision to let
the Windsor results stand in spite of the minor confusion.
Aside from the rules confusion a few other interesting things happened.
Every member of the Desimone/Lloyd/Otto/Sanguinetti
foursome birdied the 14th hole,
and none of them had putts of more than 6-feet! The
Boguski/Day/Steppan/Walburg
group experienced the opposite extreme. On the 8th hole each of them
contributed to an 8-ball total for balls deposited into the same water
hazard. This is one ball shy of three sleeves. In spite of all
the bad golf it was a fine day, with an ideal temperature, perhaps in the low 70's, and the wind was mild at most.
In the news recently
is our own Club President Ken Lloyd. Ken recently celebrated a big
birthday(10/30), reaching the half-century mark. Ken tried to quietly cross the
milestone, but Steve(7/4, four years older than Ken) couldn't resist sounding the alarms and informing
everyone he could. At any rate, Happy Birthday to Ken! Even though he
played well this weekend, it might be a while before he shoots his
age.
Below are the photos from that day. Photo
credit goes to Walburg and Webb. Webb was using our new
digital camera!!!

Many of the golf tales told our club members are filled with the same substance
which keeps these objects airborne.

Yes, there are golf photos on this page, but these two shots look neat
together. These are the silos on hole 3.

Recently impressive Yoch Lin arrived very early and got plenty of pre-tournament
practice. He evidently needed more though, as he shot a 99 (net 84).

Jeff Hazel and Rory Armstrong also fell shy of recent performances.
Jeff had a miserable front nine, a score (54) that was 3 strokes above the
51-stroke 4th flight average (Sorry, Jeff. I couldn't help myself). Still,
he pulled himself together shooting a steady 43 on the back.

Dave Webb placed third. Dave was playing his round while toting the
club's new digital camera. Dave had plenty of great shots during his round.
Most of these were using the camera (like the photo of the silos above),
but his even-par 36 on the back nine most certainly included several great
golf shots. His back nine score was the day's best, by two full strokes.
He also won the CTP on hole #11.

Ralph Hill and Mike Birnbach discuss nuclear physics on the
practice green. Either that or they were talking about last night's
episode of Ally McBeal. It's difficult to say with those two.

Chad Carey warms up before his solid round of 84(net 75). He placed
4th in the first flight.

Steve Obana and new member Chris Brown getting accustomed to the
speedy greens. Steve fired a 78(net 68) to win the second flight. He also
won the CTP on hole #11.

Ken Lloyd shot a 78(net 72) placed him 2nd in the first flight. Here
he is hitting his opening drive on #1. The Lloyd/Desimone/Otto/Sanguinetti
foursome was the day's most successful. Steve Desimone placed 1st in the
first flight while Ken placed 2nd. Steve Sanguinetti placed 3rd in the second
flight and Rollie Otto place 1st in the third flight.

Steve Sanguinetti placed 3rd in the second flight with a 79 (net 70).
His 39 on the front was bested only by Steve Desimone's amazing 34.

Steve Desimone had the day's best round with an even par 72 (net 68).
His blistered the front nine with a 2-under 34. Steve easily captured the
first flight.

Rollie Otto on #1. Rollie's 86 (net 71) earned him 1st place in the
third flight. Rollie also won the CTP with a shot to 35'-2" on #11.

Andrew Kang fired an 83 (net 70) to finish 2nd in the second flight.
He edged past Steve Sanguinetti in a tie-breaker.

Yoch Lin looked great on the first tee, but things got a little ugly
on the front nine. Still, he regrouped and did well on the back.

Club Champion Tom Furtado shot a 95 (net 75), but this was only good
enough for 4th place in the fourth flight.

Ken Alton hits his opening drive on #1.

Mike Armstrong, Ralph Hill and Mike Birnbach on #11. None of these
rugged golfers performed exceptionally on this day. At least they had one
another to console with and later drink beer.

Here on the 11th tee are Ralph Hill and Dave Webb. Dave would win the
CTP on this hole with a shot to 13'-7.5". Dave fired a 78 (net 74)
and placed 3rd in the first flight. His masterful 36 on the back nine was
the day's lowest. Dave also broke in the new
club camera.

Mike Armstrong on the tricky 4th hole.

Ralph on #1.

Vince Garcia on the first hole. Vince placed second in the blind bogey
flight behind Larry Smith. What's kind of funny is that Larry Smith has
been away from the club so long that he was placed in the blind bogey
flight. It worked out for him though, as his net score would not have
earned him anything in the flight he would have played in.

Can you say back swing? Edgar Johnson has the club's longest. Here he
winds up on #1.

Don Wade on #1. Don placed 5th in the third flight.

Bob Traum could have played better today. Instead he opted to play
left-handed.

Here Bob hits his approach shot at #4.

Saul Geiser on hole #2. Saul was on track to possibly place in the
first flight, but had to bail out after the front nine.

Club Champ Mark Steppan hits his drive on #4. Mark played well, but
it's tough when you only get 4 strokes.

Here Mark putts out on #16.

Mark Boguski proudly follows his drive on #4.

Here Mark splits the trees with his drive on #17.

Jeff Day on #4. Jeff was "on" today, but only if describing
his beer-drinking.

On #12 Jeff got into a some deep trouble (literally)). Jeff seems to
find loads of trouble on golf courses.

Ron Gallagher tracks his ball on #5. Ron's 89 (net 74) was good enough
for a 2nd place finish in the third flight. A few weeks after the
tournament Ron appeared on the channel 2 news. Having spent some time in
the middle east he was interviewed about the recent talks of a potential
war.

Jerry Powell on #5. Jerry had a rough day and was considering hanging
up the bag. Golf is a love/ hate recreation. Unfortunately it's most often
the hate that rears its ugly head. Thankfully people like Jerry make it
fun just to hang out and walk the course despite the results.

Scott Meredith on #5. Scott placed 3rd in the third flight shooting a
92 (net 75).

He Scott makes a tricky putt on the appallingly horrible 15th green.

Dave Rose on #5. Dave placed 3rd in the fourth flight with a 93 (net
73). Dave also won the CTP with a precise shot to 50-feet.

Russ Greenwood with his signature beach towel in the hip pocket. You
never know when you might need to dry off after a fresh dip in a water
hazard.

Remarkably, Russ' towel never seems to fall out. Even this violent
bunker shot on #8 had no effect on the towel.

For a guy that only played four tournaments last year, Bob Sternbach
did alright today. By anyone else's standards, however, he sucked.

Kelly Alvarez didn't suck. He shot a 95 (net 71) and captured 2nd
place in the fourth flight. Here Kelly chips onto the green at #8.

Speaking of not sucking, Gary Vollen fired the day's lowest net score,
67 to easily walk away with a fourth flight victory. His 43 on the front
nine was particularly impressive. Here Gary hits his drive on #14.

Martin Kitchener hits a delicate chip-and-run on #16.

New member Stacey Mackey splashes out of a greenside bunker on #16.

2002 Golfer of the Year Aaron Walburg carried the creek at #17 with
his second shot. Here he chipped on and sank the putt for his second
consecutive birdie. This 2-hole stretch was the only bright spot in an
otherwise ghastly round.

Kelly Alvarez and Jeff Day celebrate at the 19th hole. Actually Jeff
didn't win anything. He was just celebrating his ability to drink beer. We
all have our strengths.
