2004-2005 Board Members

The Board for the University of California Golf Club (NCGA Associate Club #53-695) is comprised of two elected Officers and nine Board Members. Board Members serve two-year terms. Elections are held every other year near the end of the season (September-October).

Here is the current Board. It reflects the recent elections held October 2003.

* - The Club Manager is a non-elected position working under the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports. The Club Manager oversees day-to-day operations of the club.

2004-2005 Election Results - Panic Ensues as Webmaster Elected Club President

At Roddy Ranch, Steve Desimone had all the members guessing. One day after the election had officially ended he said the election for club president was "down to one vote", but that he hadn't had a chance to collect Friday's mail to finalize the results. On Monday, November 3rd, he made the final tally and announced that in an extremely close race Aaron Walburg had narrowly edged Ken Lloyd for Club President. This ushers in a dark and uncertain era for the club. Ken had served 16 years (8-consecutive 2-year terms) as Club President, guiding it flawlessly since 1987. With mixed emotions Walburg shakily assumes the helm of this behemoth super-tanker known as the UC Golf Club. Emotions are mixed in part because his election meant Ken would not be serving as Club President. Ken is the most solid person and friend one could ever hope for, and having served as President for 16 years, Ken has become an invaluable resource for the club. Additionally there are mixed emotions because Walburg's pocketbook will be suffering a major blow from purchasing all the beer he'd promised the many unscrupulous voting members. His overblown campaign focused on the core of our membership, a disorderly group of short-sighted, imprudent, beer-loving, bog-trotters with poor-judgment. The tactic proved successful, further evidence that the majority of our members fall within this demographic. Walburg has little experience in the leadership role, however he's quite adept at generating endless and rambling web pages (like this one) while cloistered away in a cold, dark room (like this one). Walburg is the 9th person to serve as President (also known as the club's "Head Waiter" or "Most-Indentured Servant"). Please email Aaron any and all ideas/comments/suggestions about how best to avoid icebergs. Also, please help remind him if he owes you a beer. There were so many empty campaign promises that it's difficult to remember them all.

We would like to congratulate and welcome Mike Birnbach as the club's new Secretary/Treasurer. Mike is the 7th person to serve as Secretary for the club and the 6th person to serve as Treasurer.

The 2004-2005 Board is identical to the 2002-2003 Board as no incumbent was out-voted. Eddie Reed begins his record 25th year serving on the board. The new board includes the following nine members (terms are 2 years):

Mike O'Neill (20yrs./10th-consecutive term, 1985-present)
Jim Peretti (4yrs./2nd-consecutive term)
Eddie Reed (26yrs./13th term, 7th-consecutive term, 1976-1977, 1979-1989, 1991-present)
Dave Webb (4yrs./2nd-consecutive term)

Desimone reports that this was by far the highest-ever turnout for an election. There were 77 ballots cast. The previous record was 46 ballots.

Officers and their Indexes

This segment is a rough attempt to approximate the skill levels of our past and present Secretaries, Treasurers, and Presidents. Going through the archives we were able to gather past Course Handicaps. Primarily Boundary Oaks was used. From these course handicaps a rough set of data was assembled and used to approximate the indexes of each person. Indexes vary over time and these will vary 1-2 strokes up and down, however the listed index is as close an approximation as possible for each player given an average set of course handicaps over a period of years.

Tim Jackson was probably our best-golfing President. Red Passman (~25.8 index) was perhaps our least skilled with the sticks. Surprisingly Walburg (~13.6 index) likely ranks as our third best skilled golfing President behind Tim Jackson ~(4.8) and Ken Lloyd (~5.6). Our best golfing Treasurer was probably Larry Baker. (~10.3 index) and our best-golfing Secretary is current Secretary Mike Birnbach (~12.8).
