Cal Golf
This section covers a few of the Cal Golf activities that many
of our club members participate in each year. The University of California Men's
Golf Team competes as a Division 1 team in the Pac-10 conference. Most members of the
U.C. Golf Club are affiliated with the University.
As such many of them follow the successes of the Cal Golf team and support
the team. The ties between the organizations are further strengthened in
that Steve Desimone, the manager for the U.C. Golf Club, is also the head
coach of the Cal Men's golf team. Current news regarding the golf team are
available on the golf
team website.
Every year the Cal Golf team holds several fundraisers. These
fundraisers are the primary source for funding of the University's golf
program. Since many of members of the UCGC attend these annual events, we
have begun providing the results.
Annual Cal Golf Fundraiser:
Support the Cal Golf team while enjoying fine golf at a premier local course. This event takes place annually around September.
Contact Steve for
information on participating in this event. Sign up early as event often sells out.
The 2003 Cal Golf fundraiser was the most successful
fundraiser to date. The sold-out event was attended by about a dozen UCGC
members. In all there was an attendance of 130 participants. It was held
at the Orinda Country Club on September 15, 2003.
Annual Big Game Cup Fundraiser:
The Big Game Cup is an annual fundraiser that takes place every year just
prior to the Big Game football match between Cal and Stanford. The Fundraiser
benefits both the Cal and Stanford Men's Golf teams.
Contact Steve for
information on participating in this event. The 2002 Big Game Cup saw Cal defeat Stanford
41.5 to 30.5. It was the 6th consecutive Big Game Cup for Cal, which also
boosted it's overall Big Game Cup record to 8-3. If you ever participate
in this event, make sure and visit our Guide
to Winning the Big Game Cup at Stanford Golf Course page.

Cal Men's team barely misses cut to earn trip to NCAA
Championship
The Men's team received a bid to compete in
the NCAA West Regional hosted by the University of New Mexico
on May 16-18 at their Championship Golf Course in
Albuquerque. The Bears were seeded 21st in the 27-team field, and placed
12th. The top 10 teams advanced to the NCAA championships in Columbus, Ohio, May 29-June 1. Peter
Tomasulo also narrowly missed the opportunity to earn a place
individually, for the top 2 players from teams other than the top 10
also received invitations. Regardless of the narrow misses, the team
performed extremely well. Texas Tech advanced as the 10th qualifer after a one-hole playoff victory over
SDSU. Individuals advancing in a playoff were: Mark Warman (SDSU) and John Merrick (UCLA).
