These records are based on thorough research of the archives. There are probably a few unrecorded low gross scores, however for the most part the following records are accurate. If anyone knows of any records not recorded here, please contact Aaron.

Lowest Gross Scores include all flights from any recorded round, except:

• Individual performances in the 2-Ball are not easily tracked, however, tedious research has uncovered all the lowest recorded 2-Ball scores.

• Scores from multi-day tournaments are not included.

• Scores above 4-over par, which failed to place are not included.

How would you like to shoot a 2-under par (gross) and place third as happened to Dave Wilcox at Franklin Canyon in 1992? Or how about firing a 3-under 67 as Ken Lloyd did on at Tilden Park - 2-Ball in 1988, only to place 3rd? Or how about firing a 2-under par and not placing at all, as happened to Mark Phillips at Willow Park in 1993!

* The scores included here are based solely on NCGA handicap indexes which were set in place on August 9, 1980. Since this list does not include any net scores prior to that time these scores reflect true records for low net in an event. Also, only two outstanding scores from the 2-Ball competition have been included. Individual performances in the 2-Ball are not easily tracked.

Largest Margin of Victory (Thru March 2003)

Likely the most stunning margin occurred when Bob Traum turned in an impressive net 68 and lost by 12 strokes when Paul Higaki turned in a net 56.

All-Time Strongest (Most Sandbaggish) Seasons - The Dominance Index

Over the years the UCGC has endured some fairly significant sandbagging campaigns. (Historically, any time a UCGC member has had loads of success, the blanket term "sandbagging" has been liberally applied. It's always been in good humor. The very first mention of the term in a UCGC newsletter occurred on 9/28/79) It's difficult to assess how often, in a perfect world, each person might win a tournament. We have extreme examples of fruitless years on the UCGC tour (see below the list of Honest Abes). This analysis, however, examines and ranks single-season performances in terms of shameless domination, as measured by the Dominance Index (See below).

The coldest-ever winter of sandbagging oppression occurred in 1989 when Skip Thomas placed in 12 of the 15 tournaments and won 5 outright. The three events he in which he did not place were: 1). Kooman Boycheff at Boundary Oak, where his net 71 put him in 4th, 1-stroke back. 2). Lake Chabot where his net 68 put him in 4th, 1-stroke back. and 3). The Eddie Reed tournament, in which he did not participate. If you consider his not having played in the Eddie Reed, his actual placing percentage was 86%. His average net score during that season was 69. Skip Thomas' dominance index of 42 is over four times the dominance index Kelly Alvarez recorded during his GOY season.

The most heartbreaking season was probably Skip Thomas' 1994 season. (The easiest way to view the strongest GOY and non-GOY seasons is via the Sorted by GOY list.) Skip actually had a higher Dominance index (31) than did Paul Zingg (29). Each had four wins and three seconds, but Skip had a third place finish where Paul had none. Paul won due mainly to his Eddie Reed participation. Paul won three matches before losing to Tim Jackson in the final (4+2). (Interestingly, throughout his entire UCGC career, Skip Thomas only ever participated in the Eddie Reed event one year. It was in the 1983 season. He lost by forfeit to Clay Taylor, our founding president.). Of course nobody except Skip viewed his GOY shortcoming as heartbreaking, for, by this time Skip had won GOY in three of the past six seasons. Mike O'Neill's 1999 GOY campaign was another heartbreaker. Ken Lloyd began that season by winning four of the first five events. He edged Mike by a single point when he placed in the Club Championship. Mike had a late start that season, but had the all-time hottest finish. In the fifth from final event he placed fourth. He then placed 1st in each of the final four tournaments. It was a very strange season, to say the least. Their seasons ranked 6th and 9th on the All-Time Dominance Index, with Ken edging Mike by a single point, confirming the closeness and ultimate result of that race.

"Di" formula: (# of 1st place finishes x 5) + (# of 2nd place finishes x 3) + (# of 3rd place finishes x 2)

• Sorted by Strength of Season (as measured by Dominance index).

[It's basically a shortened version of the above file, "Sorted by Strength of Season (as measured by Dominance index)".] The criteria required for making the list is having a Dominance index of at least 20 points or having won GOY.

GOY = member won Golfer of the Year that season. 
Di = "Dominance Index" (See above)
DiR = Dominance index Ranking, i.e. the ranking attributed to the season, in terms of its strength. 
NR = Not Ranked, i.e. season made this list not by strength of season, but by virtue of other criteria as listed above. 
TotPlc = Total number of times member placed during that season
Events = # of tournaments held that season. 
Place% = "TotPlc" divided by "Events". 
Flight = flight in which the member typically played. 
IrregWs = Irregular Wins - lists any wins which occurred in non-standard tournaments or flights, LG = Low Gross, BB = Blind Bogey.
#M = Number of Major titles wins. This does not mean winning a flight in a Major, but winning the title. 
Majors: KB = Kooman, ER = Eddie Reed, FS = Fac/Staff, CC = Club Championship, 2B = 2-Ball, "n" = net, "g" = gross. 
Lock = GOY was locked up prior to Club Championship tournament, a sure sign of oppression. 

Honest Abes

This is a quick survey of some of the members who have had the fewest wins (net flights only) over the course their UCGC careers. It's not clear that every member played with equal regularity, however you can bet that one of three things are true for anyone who made this list: either A). They're much more honest than everyone else in the club, or B). They are reverse-sandbaggers and post fictitiously low scores in order to boast of low handicaps. They'd sooner give themselves a 75-foot putt before scribbling down a "6" on their scorecard,  or C). They cave under any pressure and begin uncontrollably lobbing balls OB if they get the slightest whiff of competition. It's difficult to say how often a person should, given the law of averages, win a flight, but one can say for certain that none of these members ever studied law.

Hidden Irony - A case of extreme opposites attracting? Biglin and Maters are regular playing partners with Elliott Zeller. One would think both sides could learn something from each other.

Most consecutive wins

During the history of the club there have been twelve occurrences of three-consecutive wins or more. The following list documents these occasions. Several of them are not "pure" streaks. By pure we mean a streak whereby every event is a standard flighted tournament. The notes describe any abnormalities. The 4-wins streaks by Lloyd and O'Neill occurred during the same wild season (1999).

The Longest Consecutive Winning Streak

Elliott Zeller won six consecutive tournaments: Poppy Ridge, Boundary Oak, Bodega Harbour and Las Positas, Wente Vineyards and Adobe Creek. The streak included the the overall low net title at the Club Championship. None of these wins involved tie-breakers.

Most Consecutive 2nd Place Finishes

Jack Mermod placed 2nd during four consecutive events in 1985: 3/2/85, 4/6/85, 5/4/85, 5/11/85

Most Consecutive Birdies during a Tournament Round

* - Mark also had 8 birdies during a 10-hole stretch. He shot a 64 and won the President's Trophy (Low Gross).

Most Consecutive CTPs

For the time-being, the record appears to be 3-in-a-row, held by Ernie Hudson:

Occurrences of the Very Rare 'Double CTP'

It's only happened seven times during the history of the club that a player wins both CTPs during a tournament at which two are held. Generally these occur only during a major event. Particularly they are most common to the Club Championship. However they have also occurred at the Faculty/Staff and the trip tournaments. Interesting to note is that Mark Steppan has the best performance for combined distance (15'-10"). Skip Thomas was the only player ever to win the flight and both CTPs. That was also the only Double CTP to occur outside of the months of September or October (in other words, during a non-Club Championship event).

Most Putts on a Hole

This was the infamous "volcano" pin placement incident.

* Most players at least 3-putted the hole. Steve Desimone 5-putted. Paul Witkay had an index of about 9.3 at the time! The pin placement was so bad the Rancho Solano gave a free round to each participant to make up for it.

Most Consecutive Seasons with at least one Win

Participation - Most Consecutive Events (speculative)

This is speculative, but doubtless nobody has ever before failed to miss an event for 5 years running. Of course a detailed analysis of the archives would be required to confirm. As impressive as this feat might appear, sadly, it's simply a barometer of one's social life, or lack thereof. It serves as a testament to the most-wretched social life in the history of the club.

Longest Dry Spell Between Major Wins

17 Years - Ken Lloyd won the  President's Trophy (Faculty/Staff Overall Low Gross) in 1984 and in 1985 but then had a dry spell until 2002 when he once again had his name engraved on the President's Trophy.

Most Major Titles in a Single Season
