Double-Eagles:
-
April 1, 1988: Mike Armstrong Double-Eagled the
13th hole at Tilden Park (2-iron)
Mike Armstrong recorded the recorded the first double-eagle to occur
during one of our tournaments. He did it during an Eddie Reed match
against Eddie Reed himself. Mike hit a 2 iron on the par five thirteenth
hole at Tilden Park. The pin was on the upper tier. The ball landed on the
roller tier, climbed up the bank and disappeared into the hole. Both Eddie
and Mike saw it. A group of Tilden seniors were on the old lawn area where
the patio is now located and they cheered. Mike went 3 or 4 up on Eddie at
that point and went on to win the match 4 and 2. Mike's score that day was
41 + 38 = 79.
-
December 11, 2004: Steve Sanguinetti Double-Eagled the
2nd hole at Las Positas (2-wood)
Steve Sanguinetti had a double-eagle on the par 5 2nd hole at Las
Positas. After a 284 yard drive to the right side of the fairway Steve had
about 210 yards remaining. It's not his favorite shot, as he prefers to
hit the ball right to left. He hit a 2-wood ("The Deuce", Callaway Big
Bertha), fading it perfectly. It felt and looked great. It landed, bounced
a few times, and rolled into the hole for a double eagle! He saw it go in.
It's not usual to expect to be 2 under par after the first two holes,
especially after taking a bogey on the first hole. One of Steve
Sanguintti's playing partners that day was Steve Desimone, GolfWeek's
"Coach of the Year" and Coach of the 2004-05 NCAA Champion Golden Bears!
Steve went on to place second behind Ken Lloyd.
The Odds
The odds of a hole-in-one are ~13,000 to 1.
The odds of a double-eagle almost ~6 million to 1.
A double eagle is thus about 1200 times more rare.

double-eagles) can be provided by the san Francisco chronicle. Each Sunday
they publish the week's holes-in-one. They have not historically published
double-eagles, but we can try. To contact the chronicle in such instances
the best means is to phone their sports department and obtain an email
address or phone number of a golf editor or whoever is most appropriate.
