Membership Information

Eligibility

The University of California Golf Club is open to anyone, man or woman. Individuals need not be affiliated with the University to join. In order to maintain proper scale for tournament contracts with golf courses, the club is limited to 135 members. Membership is granted on a first come first serve basis, with renewals being given priority. Once the 135 memberships are filled a waiting list is formed.

Fees

The first year costs $150 for U.C. affiliates (faculty, staff, alumni, and students from any of university within the University of California system, i.e., UC Davis, UCLA, UC Santa Cruz, etc.) or $200 for those with no U.C. affiliation. Renewing your membership each year thereafter costs $80. Included in these fees is membership in the NCGA.

Application

To join the University of California Golf Club please visit the Application page. There you can download a copy of the Application  Form which you can complete and send to Steve Desimone, the Club Manager. Or you can simply send Steve an email (which includes your phone number, he's a phone guy) and he'll contact you.

MORE INFORMATION:

(Below is the content of the letter that new members currently receive. This is also available as a PDF file.)

The UCGC is composed of University of California faculty, staff, alumni, students, retirees and associate members (no U.C. affiliation).  We have tournament competition once a month on different golf courses in the Bay Area and around Northern California.  The entry fee consists of the green fee, prize money and almost always the cart fee, all of which are allocated to that specific tournament.  We schedule special events such as golfing weekends to Lake Tahoe or Monterey, inter-club tournaments with groups such as arch rivals, the University of California San Francisco Golf Club, and golfing vacations to Hawaii or other places desired by the membership.  We communicate with our members through a monthly mailing (available in print or e-mail format) which usually includes a newsletter, a starting sheet for our upcoming tournament and an entry for the following event.

The UCGC is a component of the Recreational Sports Department and operates from Strawberry Canyon Center on the U.C. campus.  Our club manager (and the head men’s golf coach at Cal), Steve Desimone, is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the club, for recommending long-term goals and objectives to the officers of the club and to the Board of Directors, and for other duties as required.  The club manager is the only salaried person on the staff.  The responsibility for the operation of the club rests with elected officers and the club manager.  With the exception of the club manager’s position, all of these people are volunteers and are elected to two-year terms.  There is a faculty/staff advisor position which is filled on a voluntary basis at the invitation of the board.

The UCGC is an Associate Member Club of the Northern California Golf Association (NCGA).  Your membership in the UCGC automatically entitles you to membership in the NCGA and the establishment of an index/handicap with that organization.  Our associate member status also entitles you to nearly all of the NCGA sponsored programs.  The UCGC abides by the United States Golf Association (USGA) rules for all tournament play and our indexes are computed by their system.

I am enclosing a copy of our schedule, a new member application form and our most recent monthly mailing.  To begin the membership process, please complete the application and return it with your check for the indicated amount (made payable to U.C. Golf Club).  If you have any questions, please call me at the office (510-643-5914).

Go Bears!
