Statistics
This page links various statistical analysis pages. These
stats span from 1976 to February and March of 2003. This data will not be updated
regularly. The primary purpose here is to record and summarize
what has occurred since the early years of the club.

Flight Results ranked by Flight Winner, then by Date
These files provide a complete record of full results from
373 UCGC tournaments and 1,722 flights. This is the culmination of 18 months of work.
With a very conservative estimate of 12 hours
per week, this project has taken at least 936 hours to complete. That's
enough time to play over 200 rounds of golf. The project began in
October of 2001 with the sorting through, scanning, and photographing every historically
significant club document. After about a year this monumental task was
completed. Organizing digital files into a functional archive took another
4 months. At this point the web Archive was in place to serve as a
research tool. Combing through the created archive, gathering, and
cross-checking all the data began last December and ended last weekend, on
March 2nd, 2003. It took a very solid week of very late nights to sculpt the data
into a format which not only efficiently housed the data, but one which
provided the easiest interpretation. It's 2am on March 10, 2003, and a
whole new level of detail is now at the fingertips of every member.
Whether or not anyone cares is, of course, a thought that comes quickly to
mind. However, no club in the world can likely match the detail we have
preserved from the past 28 years. Remarkably, I can compress this data to
fit onto a single floppy drive. In fact the entire site, with all of the
flight data, the complete UCGC archive, and 4,000 photos can be
burned onto a single CD, which costs about 35 cents. At any rate,
I'm glad it's finally online. Over the next few weeks I'll be posting
great things like: "All-time lowest net scores", "All-time
lowest gross scores", as well as a complete tally for each member in
terms of first place finishes, second place finishes, majors, etc. Once
that's done I'll probably get a life. Included
in the flight column of the above files is a category, "LowGs". In many majors, where there is a winner
of an overall low gross, often there is no real flight for this. The
overall low gross is simply determined and the emphasis has been placed on
say, the winner of the 1st flight. In order to view the results for the
overall low gross category a new term has been devised, that is, the LowGs
flight, an
imaginary flight. All it does is extract and rank the lowest gross scores.
Ties for first are always resolved in a playoff. Ties for second third or
fourth were done by first looking for the best back nine score, then by
best handicap index. In low a low gross tournament there's never a playoff for fourth place, however, since there is room in the
spreadsheet we might as well place a name there to provide an idea of who
was playing well that day.
Lowest Gross Scores During a Tournament
(Thru March 2003)
Lowest Gross Scores include all flights from any recorded round, except:
-
Individual performances in the 2-Ball are not easily tracked,
however, tedious research has uncovered all the lowest recorded 2-Ball
scores.
-
Scores from multi-day tournaments are not included.
-
Scores above 4-over par, which failed to place are not
included.

Majors Matrix
(Thru 2004 Season, 9/5/04) Provides a complete tally of all
Majors since 1967. This matrix is something that
Paul Zingg recommended generating in 2001.

Ties
(Thru February 2003)
(See also: Playoff History,
which addresses extra holes during low gross championships) Below
is all the data on ties and tiebreakers. Ties used to be determined by a
handicap-hole based "card matching" process which involved
comparing scores on the #1 handicap hole, then on the #2 handicap hole,
etc, until the winner was determined. More recently the club has adopted
the USGA recommended method of card matching. If there is a tie the
following succession of tie-breakers now come into effect:
| 1. Gross score over last 9 holes,
minus 1/2 of course handicap |
| 2. Gross score over last 6 holes,
minus 1/3 of course handicap |
| 3. Gross score over last 3 holes,
minus 1/6 of course handicap |
| 4. Gross score on 18th hole, minus
1/18 of course handicap |
* The tie-breaker for Blind Bogey flights is low gross score.
The
following PDF files provide lists, by category, of all recorded tiebreakers since
1976.

CTP Data

CTP Data Organized in Seven Different Ways (580

these pages require time to open, especially in Netscape. If using
Netscape give it several minutes to complete. Patience is the key):
The Double (Thru
February 2003) This is a
Double Victory. It consists of placing in a flight and wining the CTP.
As of March 1, 2003 this feat
has occurred 430 times, with 157 Golden Doubles (1st place finish). The most rare feat is the
Golden Sharp-Shooter (1st place and two CTPs!). More rare than a hole-in-one, it has only occurred
once.

Eddie Reed Match Play Tournament Statistics
(Thru 2002 Season)
Have you ever wondered which member has, during the
20-year history of the tournament, won the second-most Eddie Reed matches?
Anyone with the club for the past few years has witnessed the carnage and
knows that certainly Steve Desimone has the most wins, but at second there
is more of a pack. Only three members have participated in every
tournament. These dedicated members are Steve Desimone, Jack King, and
Boyd McCaslin. Over the years there have been 755 matches played, with 126
of them coming from the championship flight. 237 different members
have played in the event. Thanks to Steve's organizational skills (he'd
saved every single Eddie Reed result) this great bank of data was able to
be analyzed.
Eddie Reed Participation through the
Years
(through 2003 season) Listed below is the
Eddie Reed Match Play Tournament participation by year. Sub totals are also
listed for Championship flight and net flights. During several years there
weren't enough players to generate a championship flight. This year (2004)
the Eddie Reed Tournament will see a greater participation than we've had in
many years. In fact we'll have more participants than we've had in 20 years
(1984). Listed below is the Eddie Reed Match Play Tournament participation
by year. Sub totals are also listed for Championship flight and net flights.
During several years there weren't enough players to generate a championship

Most Rounds per Year
Which members play the most rounds of golf
during a given 12-month span? The Costs of Golf (Thru
February 2003) This section examines the rising costs of
golf over time.
Graphs
-
Average
Tournament Entry Fee over Time - Reveals the rising cost of a
round of golf.
-
Total
Expenses for 28 years - This is a whimsical look at what would
happen were someone to invested in various manners the funds
required to participate in every UCGC tournament. Of course, no one
has played in every tournament. Nevertheless, the measure of joy and
liberation one would experience with the golf would be well worth the
cost. Besides, the wisest of us realizes it's more about the
friendships than the golf, and this is, as the popular commercial
states, "priceless".
Raw Data - Below is the raw data used to generate the above
graphs.
